Apple wants to control what shoes you wear. In a deal with Nike, the computer company came up with a wireless sensor that slots into Nike+ running shoes and sends the time, speed and distance of your run to a receiver attached to an iPod Nano. To stop people attaching the sensor to any other make of shoe, Apple now plans to bury an RFID chip inside Nike+ shoes that will authenticate and activate the sensor, according to US patent application 2008/0218310.
