Airlines cancel Indonesia flights as eruptions continue

INDONESIA’S Mount Merapi continues to pump out clouds of ash and dust, more than a week after the eruption began.

Thirty-eight people are confirmed dead. Meanwhile, several airlines have cancelled flights to the region, as volcanic ash can knock out aircraft engines. The risk is well known but it is unclear how much ash engines can cope with, though preliminary standards were established earlier this year after Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano .

According to Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, two other volcanoes are on high alert: Mount Karangetang and Mount Ibu.
