X-ray protection

Reduce damage to DNA from X-rays by taking antioxidants, say researchers this week at the Society of Interventional Radiology meeting in Chicago. People who took an antioxidant mixture including vitamin C, glutathione and uric acid for five days before a scan sustained 30 to 50 per cent less damage to their DNA in blood samples.

Tigers rising

Indian tiger numbers are on the rise, according to a report by the Indian government’s National Tiger Conservation Authority. The 2010 tiger census put the population of Indian tigers at 1706 – up 20 per cent on the 2006 estimate.
