Fungus-resistant bats

Some colonies of little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) appear to be resistant to white nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has ravaged the North American bat population. Biologists from the Pennsylvania Game Commission are to meet to work out how the bats have survived.

Uniquely hot

Hydrothermal vents deep in Antarctic waters are unlike those elsewhere. Many typical vent animals like tube worms are missing, perhaps because they cannot get to the vents through the cold polar waters. Instead, the vents are home to yeti crabs (PLoS Biology, ).
