IT’S hard to reach adulthood without contemplating the origins of one’s parts. Boys wonder why their penis is shaped so; girls ponder how their breasts came to be; and both parties puzzle over pubic hair.

Most people eventually stop worrying. Perhaps they satisfy their curiosities, or maybe societal pressures silence their queries. Some minds, however, never stop questioning.

Jesse Bering is a case in point. An evolutionary psychologist by training, he also openly admits to having a long-held fondness for the inappropriate. Why Is The Penis Shaped Like That? is an exercise in marrying the two.
