Matthew H. Birkhold is a professor of Germanic Literature and law at The Ohio State University. He is also the founding director of the Umwelt Center for Environmental Humanities. He holds a BA and JD from Columbia University and PhD from Princeton University. Prior to joining Ohio State, he worked as an attorney-adviser for the U.S. Department of State. Matthew’s most recent book, , was published in 2023. His writing has appeared in outlets including The New York Times, the Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, and Indian Country Today.
