Tim Friede is director of herpetology at Centivax, a biotechnology company based in California. He devoted more than 15 years of his life to self-experimentation, gradually building up his immunity to snakebite. He has been bitten by venomous snakes on more than 200 separate occasions. In 2025, antibodies from his blood were shown to protect mice from the worst effects of a wide variety of snake venoms. The research is a step towards developing a broad-spectrum snake antivenom.
