Tom Bawden is a science writer who focuses on health, medicine and the environment. He worked as science and environment correspondent at The i Paper for a decade before going freelance at the end of 2025. He still writes a regular environment column for The i. Prior to this, he was environment editor at The Independent. Before focusing on science, Bawden wrote about business for outlets including The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Observer and Evening Standard. He also worked for The Times, where he was Wall Street correspondent, based in New York, during the financial crash. Bawden has a journalism MA from Dublin City University in Ireland and has taken journalism courses at the University of California, Berkeley, on a postgraduate scholarship.
