Iron stains

Question:: During my long hours ironing, I have noticed that when I use a hot
iron some colours, mainly reds and blues, change shades. Why does this
happen?

Answer:: When a garment, especially an older and more worn one, has been
freshly washed, the surface fibres fluff up and become randomly aligned. These
fibres can collect and reflect light in a number of directions, making the
fabric appear lighter.

However, when they are ironed, these fibres are flattened against the fabric,
all in roughly the same direction. Therefore, less light is scattered from the
