Cold misery

Question: I have some kind of mildew that is growing in my freezer which I
can’t see but can smell. I can smell it on stored food and also on my hands
after touching the items.

Cleaning the freezer helps, but the smell soon returns, even though the
temperature is below freezing. Surprisingly, the mildew does not occur in my
adjacent refrigerator. Is freezer mildew unusual? Where does it come from and is
it potentially harmful?
