Dry seas

Question: Recently, a friend mentioned what he called “deserts at sea”. He
was referring to areas of the world’s oceans where rain seldom, if ever, falls.
I can see how this might happen, as a lot of cloud formation and rainfall
depends on topographical features such as mountains, which the sea does not
have. But do such deserts at sea really exist, how permanent are they and have
they been charted?

Answer: Arid areas of ocean certainly exist. They are caused by the
circulation pattern of the Earth’s atmosphere.
