Chutney challenge

While cooking large amounts of green tomato chutney using tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, spices, cooking apples and onions, my carbon monoxide alarm went off. It stopped when I took it outside, but when I took it back into the kitchen, it started to go off again. After the chutney was finished, I put the alarm in the boiler cupboard, just in case my gas boiler had been emitting carbon monoxide. It wasn’t the boiler, and my family are still alive, so how might the chutney have activated the alarm?
