I found this creature on the forest floor, on the Carp Ridge in Ontario, Canada (see photo). It was about 4 millimetres long. It didn’t appear to be moving, but I took it home and left it on a plastic dish with some leaves and water for sustenance. When I checked a few hours later, it had disappeared. What was it?

• The image is of a crowned slug caterpillar (Isa textula). It is a widespread species found across North America. Although the caterpillar is impressive, the moth it hatches into is pale brown and much less remarkable.
