From ERIC CREW

What an absurd idea for Alun Rees to claim that owning a Porsche and
wearing a tie is better than giving a seminar in jeans and an open-necked
shirt (‘The wages of science,’ Forum, 8 December). Having the title FRS
is worth 100 Porsches and a free life ticket for Concorde thrown in. Values
influenced by advertising are all wrong. We should aim to be casual and
happy, not smart and tycoon-like. Having an interesting job, if you have
sufficient intelligence, is more important than amassing superfluous wealth.
