The first proposal for a communications satellite in geosynchronous orbit is customarily attributed to author Arthur C. Clarke (8 September, p 50). Clarke’s 1945 proposal was predated by Hermann Noordung, the pseudonym of Captain Herman Potocnik of the old Austrian imperial army.
