A new exhibition at London鈥檚 Barbican Centre, entitled , sets out to explore the planet as a community to which we all belong. Featuring 18 works backed up by research and scientific collaborations, the show aims to connect visitors with the natural world and create a sense of belonging, says co-curator Luke Kemp. It is 鈥渁n exploration of the power of creativity to transform the conversation around the climate emergency鈥, he says.
The exhibition opens with Sanctuary of the Unseen Forest, by London-based studio Marshmallow Laser Feast. This is a 5-metre projection of a lidar-scanned tree from the Colombian part of the Amazon rainforest. It 鈥減eels the skin off a tree to show everyone what happens inside鈥, says artist Ersin Han Ersin.
Elsewhere, a collaboration between environmental activist and author George Monbiot and design agency Holition elucidates the biodiversity of soil in World Beneath Our Feet. And in The Sensible Zone we see viewers explore Earth in 2040, looking at how metropolitan systems in coastal areas have changed. Ultimately, the show asks us to think hard about how we spend the rest of our time here on Earth. See it at the Barbican until 29 August.
