Brain imaging has come a long way since the first X-ray investigations of the 1970s. Now researchers can spot a fleeting emotion, a lie, a decision, or the registering of a subliminal image we didn't know we saw. But they still want to look deeper, faster and in more detail so they can tackle more complex tasks such as tracking diseases or understanding intelligence, cognition and even consciousness itself.
